How to Read and Understand Financial Statements

Financial statements should help you understand a business, not intimidate you with accounting language. This course teaches you how to read the income statement, statement of financial position, cash-flow statement, changes in equity, notes and auditor's report, then connect them into one clear picture of performance and financial health.

You will work with practical Nigerian examples in Naira and learn how revenue, margins, receivables, inventory, debt, working capital and cash interact. You will calculate liquidity, profitability, return and leverage ratios, identify common earnings-quality warning signs, and understand how inflation, exchange rates and financing conditions can affect Nigerian company results.

The course is grounded in Nigeria's financial reporting environment, including the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, CAMA 2020 and IFRS reporting. It also aligns conceptually with the financial-statement interpretation skills found in ICAN's Financial Accounting and Financial Reporting syllabus, while remaining accessible to founders, managers, investors and professionals who are not accountants.
